Developing a Whole School Approach to Fractions and Decimals.

Friday June 14, 2024

Fractions and Decimals are one of the most challenging areas of the mathematics curriculum for many students and teachers- but it doesn’t have to be this way! Ange and Bern have developed this day to share their knowledge on the current research associated with the teaching and learning of fractions and decimals. They will look at how to introduce a whole school approach to this content area, with a particular focus on the understanding behind fractions and decimals from Years 1-6. Common misconceptions will be explored in-depth, including strategies to overcome these. Assessment tools will be explored and teachers will have time to analyse student responses. Teachers will leave this PD with an abundance of practical ideas on how to best teach fractions and decimals across the school.

Areas Covered:

  • What are fractions?
  • What are decimals?
  • What are the current research-based methods used to teach fractions and decimals from F-6?
  • Identifying and exploring common student misconceptions in fractions and decimals.
  • Fractions and Decimals across the Victorian Curriculum.
  • Quality assessment tools we can use to gather data on student knowledge in fractions and decimals.
  • Quality resources and activities we can use to teach fractions and decimals.
